In recognition of International Yoga Day, we took time to reflect on the transformative power of movement, mindfulness, and community in the journey of substance use recovery.
Participants in MiraVista’s Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) experienced that power firsthand during a special chair yoga session led by Angelica Lopez, owner of Mitra Healing Yoga. With her calming presence and thoughtful guidance, Angelica created more than just a class — she created a moment of stillness, grounding, and reconnection for individuals actively working toward recovery.
For those healing from substance use, yoga offers more than physical movement. It becomes a tool for restoring the mind-body connection, managing overwhelming emotions, and finding peace in the present moment. It encourages participants to breathe deeply, stretch gently, and rebuild a sense of inner trust that may have been lost along the way. As research and experience have shown, practices like yoga can help regulate the nervous system, reduce cravings, improve sleep, and restore clarity — all essential elements in the recovery process.
We are deeply grateful to Angelica for sharing her time and her healing energy with our group. Her compassionate approach reminded us that healing doesn’t just happen through clinical care — it also comes from moments of quiet connection, from learning to be still, and from rediscovering the strength within.
To the courageous individuals in our IOP: thank you for showing up, for trusting us, and for continuing to do the hard work of recovery. Your presence, honesty, and vulnerability inspire us every day. It is our honor to walk this path beside you and to support your journey with tools — like yoga — that can foster both calm and courage.
