Before the First Bell Rings. A new school year brings new routines, expectations and emotions. Before the first bell rings, take a moment to check in, listen and make mental health part of your family’s back-to-school preparations. Visit our toolkit here.

Mental Health Belongs on the School Supply List

“Academic readiness begins with emotional readiness. Children learn best when they feel safe, connected, and supported.”

- Karyn Rossacci, DNP, MSN, NP-C, RN, CCRN, Chief Nursing Officer, The Vistas

Back-to-school preparation is usually focused on what children need to succeed academically: supplies, transportation, schedules, physicals, and completed forms. Emotional well-being deserves the same attention because a child’s ability to learn is closely connected to how safe, supported, rested, and emotionally regulated they feel.

When children are carrying persistent worry, sadness, social stress, or exhaustion, it may become harder to concentrate, remember instructions, solve problems, participate in class, manage frustration, or connect with peers. Supporting mental health is not separate from preparing a child for school—it is part of preparing them to learn.

A mental wellness check-in does not need to be complicated. It can begin with a calm conversation about what your child is looking forward to, what feels uncertain, and what support would make the transition easier. The goal is not to remove every challenge. It is to help children know they can talk about difficult feelings and that caring adults will notice, listen, and help.
