The Reality and the Responsibility of Behavioral Health Care

From classroom theory to real-world care, discovering what it truly means to support individuals in a psychiatric setting.

Being at MiraVista has helped me understand what exactly it is I want to pursue and revealed to me the truth behind what it means to be a behavioral health worker. My co-op experience has been far more comprehensive than I initially imagined, offering me a deep dive into the diverse departments that keep a psychiatric hospital functioning. From medical records and finance to intake and marketing, I have seen how every role whether clinical or administrative is a vital part in the process of patient care. Observing the medical director balance hospital operations with direct patient responsibilities, and even sitting in on a court case, has provided me with an understanding of the legal and logistical aspects common in this field.

One of the most significant aspects of my time here has been shadowing Dr. Richmond, which allowed me to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Watching him conduct psychiatric interviews taught me to look beyond just the symptoms discussed; I realized that a patient’s physical appearance and subtle behavioral cues are equally critical diagnostic indicators. This hands-on learning helped me in conducting two of my own psychiatric interviews and drafting progress notes. While I am still refining these skills, the experience of being held to a high standard of accountability has been critical in shaping my professional clinical judgment.

Beyond the clinical work, I have gained a realistic perspective on the demanding nature of the behavioral health industry. MiraVista operates at a rigorous pace, and I have learned that the qualities most valued in this environment are flexibility, reliability, and the ability to follow directions under pressure, as well as the importance of transparent communication and systemic accountability. Effective care is truly a team effort.

As I moved into my second week, my focus expanded to include marketing and outreach, where I am now assisting in projects aimed at optimizing internal staff specialties and building connections with outside pediatric and psychiatric practices. Combined with my new CPR certification and my observations during treatment team meetings, I feel I have gained a holistic view of the facility. This environment has not only taught me the technical skills of a healthcare provider but has also demonstrated the dedication and stamina required to thrive in a high-stakes, fast-moving psychiatric setting.

My interest in healthcare first took root in high school, where AP Psychology became the most engaging and formative class of my early education. I found the complexities of the human brain absolutely fascinating, and by the time I entered college, I knew without a doubt that psychology would be my major.

As I progressed through my coursework, my focus shifted from general interest to a specific mission, I wanted to pursue a career that offered the greatest possible impact on the lives of those living with mental illness. I realized that psychiatry represents that opportunity. To me, there is value in understanding the shifts in brain chemistry that occur when a disorder develops, and I am driven by the challenge of translating that clinical knowledge into the practice of psychiatry.

Words of wisdom: I’ve learned that in behavioral health, the most powerful tool that providers have isn’t just the clinical skills to diagnose, but the ability to listen and understand patients. Every patient has a story that deserves to be heard.
